They wanted their wedding photos shared, just not their faces.
So alongside the full day of traditional coverage, we built in a set of images made specifically to be posted, using detail, movement and composition to tell the story without ever showing who was telling it.
THE STORY SO FAR
NO-FACES WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
As a Story Durham wedding photographer, I get asked more and more often by couples who want to share their wedding photos online. The catch is, their faces can’t be part of it. Sometimes it’s their job. Other times it’s a private family situation, or they just fancy keeping things a bit more private while still wanting something to post. Whatever the reason, my answer is always the same: brilliant, let’s have some fun with this.
I recently shot a wedding at The Story for a couple in exactly this position. They still wanted the full day covered properly for their own private album. All the usual moments were there, the ceremony, the confetti, the speeches, the dancing. But they also wanted a set of images they could actually share, just without either of them being identifiable in them.

So alongside the traditional coverage, we built in some genuinely creative “no-faces” shots, made specifically to be shared. Running hand in hand across the grounds with the building behind them. A kiss hidden entirely behind an enormous bouquet.
WHY IT WORKED
Ribbons instead of confetti thrown so thick you couldn’t see a face if you tried. Close-ups on the details instead, the lace on the veil, a tattoo, a ring, a watch, their shoes tangled together on the grass. It turns out shooting around a face, rather than at one, pushes you to notice all the other details that make a wedding day distinctive.
Honestly, some of these ended up being my favourite images from the whole day, and they got just as much reaction online as any traditional shot would have. There’s something about not being able to lean on an expression to do the emotional work. It means the composition itself has to carry it, and I loved the challenge.
THE VENUE
The Story, Durham
The Story is one of Durham’s most iconic wedding venues, a beautifully restored Grade II listed Georgian manor house set in landscaped grounds on the outskirts of Durham City. As a Story Durham wedding photographer, I’ve photographed weddings here across all four of its ceremony spaces, from the intimate Manor Room to the dramatic Grand Staircase, and I know exactly where the light falls best throughout the day.
